Mixed media collage   40"X30"

Gallery Chemould

In January 1993 communal riots errupted all over India. Bombay was the worst hit. On surface these riots were the result of animosity between the Hindu and the Muslim factions. But in essence they were politically motivated. Most of us were unprepared for the devastation it brought in its wake. Powerless to act in any way, I was a silent witness to the raging inferno. I was seething with rage, frustration and a feeling of impotency. The least I could do, I thought, is to take risks as an artist. I decided to encounter my space with an attitude I had never held before. Centering myself in the emotion of anguish and compassion, I began. The resultant collages are titled the AFTERMATH SERIES.
